Backups today for the home user are becoming increasingly difficult. First, we could back up to floppy disks. Almost all of our data could fit on a few. We also had the option of a tape backup, which was cumbersome and unreliable. Then, writing to CD seemed the option that would always be able to hold everything we needed, and when the writable DVD's came out, we were in 7th heaven.
Today, with our 10MP pictures, Digital Video, Multimedia documents, text documents that are filled with tons of metadata, emails, music, etc. we have run into a problem. Even with writeable Blu-Ray disc's, which can hold approximately 50GB of information and the classic backup technologies, can't handle the gigs and gigs of information we generate today. Personally, I have about 30 gigs of music, 15 gigs of pictures, 6 gigs worth of email (all the way back to 2000), and at least 100 gigs of needed .iso's and various other business related, static and dynamic documents. So, 150GB of data and information that I would prefer not to lose.
